URBANbuild

Studio, Spring 2016

Instructors: Byron Mouton and Sam Richards

URBANbuild is a full year, full time design + build program now twelve years in the running. I participated in the spring semester build of the eleventh prototype, a three bedroom, two bedroom home in Central City, New Orleans. We completed all phases of construction, excluding MEP installation and drywall. We dug the holes for the piles and laid the foundation ended the semester adding trim work and leveling cabinets. The experience was incredibly rewarding, and taught me valuable teamwork skills.

foundation + framing

We started in a cold January by digging holes around piles caps, then poured the concrete foundation and quickly began framing and sheathing the first two floors.

painting + roofing

We continued with sheathing, roofing, and painting throughout February and March, and began to design special shading elements for the front porch.

finish work

By April, we were completing trimwork and deciding on final paint colors for the house. We completed the project during the first week of May and recently welcomed the new homeowners.
